MR. MARION BARRY - TAKE HIM OR LEAVE HIM,
BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
I fully understand those who do not "get" Marion Barry. I do, really.  I am not so blind that I don't understand when some one does not see things the way I see them.  As a journalist, I also understand the need for some to use many hours detailing Mr. Barry's life, both public and private. He is news worthy to say the least.  Once you are considered a public figure, some news organizations take a very hands on approach. Some take it to the extreme.

One such news organization, Washington City Paper, has taken to reporting on Mr. Barry with the jest of a pit bull going for a steak.  I wonder if editorial meetings have enough absorbent material to collect the drool which must drip on the conference table when Mr. Barry's name enters the conversation.

The July 8, 2009 edition of the Washington City Paper was so vile that the front banner was deemed obscene by the Washington DC Community.  Magically, one cannot find a copy of that edition at The City paper's free Metro station boxes.  I doubt that the paper is that valuable that people scooped it up in a haste to be able to say " I have one."  This reporter thinks a "Decency Super He or Shero decided enough was enough and removed the vile filth from our eyes.  Thank you Mr. or Ms. Decency.

So offended were business owners and vendors who allow the paper within or near their establishment, they hook to altering the front cover.  The one copy that I was able to obtain was altered with scissors.

As a journalist I respect another media house's right to cover news.  I actually encourage and mentor journalist via this web site.  Many a time I have wrestled with a story or editorial about how to present a item of interest.  What attention getting banner do I use to get the big picture across?  How do I construct the title?

Freedom of speech and the press are not lost on me.  I understand and agree with thier tenets.  How can I not?  With that said, this news site has self-imposed limits.  The few rules which govern this site were born from integrity, both personal and professional.

I will, for a minute, forgo the racist aspect of this type of reporting.  I will however say that this type journalism is low handed and disrespectful.  The Washington DC Community deserves better.

How can any business owner continue to pay for promotion via advertisements with the City Paper using obscene language on it's cover?  I would not.  The bottom line is if you want us to support you, you must treat us with dignity and respect, and this was not an example of respect.
