Hotep and Black Power

to

the AG family!

My name is Kofi Taharka. I was born and raised in S.E. Banneker City (Washington D.C.).  My large family instilled in me a sense of Black pride and a responsibility of service to our community.  From the time I was very young I was always intrigued by the brief splashes that would come across the television about slavery or the movement battles of the 1960?s.

As a teenager and young adult I got the opportunity to be exposed to different movement forces including: Mukasa Dada (Willie Ricks), Kwame Ture, Khallid Muhammad, Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman, Chiekh Anta Diop and many other activist, revolutionaries, researchers and scholars.

I?ve been living in Houston for a number of years and continued my search for information in the Ta-seti African Historical Society Study Group and cut my teeth on community struggle when I joined the National Black United Front Houston Chapter (NBUF). Currently, I have the privilege, honor and responsibility of being the Houston chapter chairman.  Working with my beloved brothers and sisters of NBUF I have learned a great deal through hard Kazi and met some awesome soldiers from a broad range of ideologies, theologies, philosophies and perspective all serving our community.

In my sojourn in this great and mighty struggle I have concentrated on learning the art of organizing and bringing ideas and concepts into reality.  I firmly believe that it is our obligation to learn from the elders and embrace, train, share, listen to and learn from the next generation of servants.

I thank Sister Tyree and the AG family for giving me the opportunity to share some of my perspectives from time to time from my column which I write for a local paper entitled: From the Front-Line.
