POLITICAL SELFISHNESS During the recent incarceration of Mrs. Jackie Jackson, wife of Rev. Jackson, I was awakened to something I had never seen before: Political Selfishness. Selfishness: To be stingy 1. (3) selfish -- (concerned chiefly or only with yourself; Source: ( http://www.notredame.ac.jp) 2. concerned only with one's personal welfare, with total disregard to that of others. Source: ( http://www.allwords.com) Political: Of politics This is often voiced through sentiments such as "We have enough problems here, why are they over in (pick a location)?" This is a sign of political selfishness. How can a spiritually based Black Man or Woman, knowing the hell we have been through at the hands of our oppressors, deny anyone on the face of the earth assistance in defeating their oppressor? Who can be more of a help to other people of color in the world than Black people? We have endured and survived much, from our kidnapping to today's mental enslavement. Our Ancestors knew physical slavery, while our children think nothing of killing some one who looks like them. Some where in this journey, hopefully we have learned some answers to some very vital questions. Truth be told, we are a wonderful example of what NOT to do in many instances. Oh we have issues, plenty to be exact. I am not denying this. I hear this side of the argument. 'We have enough internal issues, ," True, true. I am not denying it by any stretch. And no I am not denying our own assistance in order to assist someone else. We are a multi tasking race and are able to do more than one thing at one time. To say this to our spokespeople or leaders is tantamount to saying, 'You are not capable of doing more than one thing at a time'. I submit the statement is incorrect, that the leader/spokesperson is quite able to do more than one thing at a time or focus their attention on more than one issue at or time. If they were not able to, I submit they would not be in the position they are in first of all. I can do one thing at a time, you can do one thing at a time, but I am sure you don't want you representative to only be able to be abreast of one issue at a time. By taking this stance, you are also saying you are not able to do for yourself. It says that you need some one to hold your hand and constantly check over your shoulder. Like a parent..... What happened to wherever you see injustice in the world, you are to stand up and call it what it is? I always thought that was part of being an adult, for it was taught to me at an early age. To make my ancestors proud one was to stand up for truth and righteousness, no matter who and where!! My Father once told me "I don't care who you are, if you wrong, you wrong." I have carried that in my heart ever since. I took it a was Great Truth. I find it is still with me. For this and other reasons, I fully support Rev. Al Sharpton and Mrs. Jackie Jackson in their support of Vieques PR. STOP THE BOMBING AND STOP IT NOW. Tyree 7/01 |
